Primary School

Inspire your students from prep to grade 6 to explore the vast world of Australian wildlife with an interactive wildlife encounter from Wildlife Gone Walkabout. Aligned with the Victoria Curriculum (F-10) biological science topics, our incursions are not only educational, but full of fun too!

What's involved?

Our Educational Incursions run for approximately 1 hour and include 10 native Australian animals that all your students can interact with. Our professional wildlife demonstrators will arrive 15 prior to the start of the encounter to set up the space ready for the encounter to start. After an introduction by our team, we discuss with the students some of the ideas that will be presented and define some relevant terms for the presentation. We then bring out each animal individually introducing the students to their unique ecology and history.

Throughout the presentation, our demonstrators will bring the animals around to your students letting them touch the wildlife, and there are also opportunities for students to come up and hold the wildlife creating a fun, tactile experience. Questions are encouraged throughout the presentation and we try to answer as many as possible within the hour. At the conclusion of the encounter, we discuss some of the highlights of the presentation and reinforce they key ideas and topics that we discussed during the show. To thank all of your students for getting involved we provide a small gift of a bookmark or sticker to remind them of their experience. After a short 15 minute pack down, our demonstrators will say goodbye and head back to the zoo.

Victorian Curriculum

(f-10)

Structured to compliment the Victorian Curriculum, our primary incursions focus specifically on Levels F - 6 using the topics, outcomes and aims directly from the syllabus. Our focus is on making learning science exciting and rewarding, using wildlife to demonstrate how living things require resources and patterns to survive. Our breathe of understanding allows us to discuss of the simplicities of basic needs of living things including food, water and shelter found at foundation, to the exchange of energy and adaptations for survival in Levels 5 & 6.

Through our sessions, students will also develop their science inquiry skills by analysing evidence, questioning and predicting information, and communicating ideas. Seeing wildlife up close in the classroom allows students to analyse shapes, textures and size, and can communication ideas from the information we discuss to predict the way these real life animal live in their niche habitats. Using the curriculum as a tool to form our incursions allows us to discuss the topics which will propel students into their future learning.

Teacher Support Material

To support the topics covered in our incursion, we provide teaching resources to all primary teachers as part of the educational incursion. Designed in collaboration with primary educators, our support material highlights the key topics covered in our presentation, and uses specific wildlife as micro case studies for the students to investigate. We provide multiple worksheets for each Level which focus on a particular topics from the curriculum. These include word searches, questions and answers sheets,letter writing and poster making.

To make certain that your incursion is both safe

and entertaining, we require the following:

  • An indoor space that is approximately 5m by 5m where the students can sit in a semicircle on the floor. A multiple purpose room or large classroom is perfect.

  • All students to wash their hands before and after the show.

  • Supervision by at least one educator throughout the presentation.

  • Parking provided at the venue as close to the presentation space as possible.

  • Access to the presentation space, uninterrupted by students for set-up and pack-up.

  • We also provide a Risk Assessment for all venues which outlines our procedures when working with animals. A copy of this can be provided to the venue prior to our arrival and requires a signature on the day.

WHAT DO WE NEED?

HANDS-ON, MINDS-ON

The ‘hands-on, minds-on’ approach to learning is fast becoming the new way of teaching in a variety of learning environments. It uses the idea that our ability to retain information is enhanced by our use of visual, spatial and tactile activities by activating multiple areas in the brain, thus creating multiple pathways of memory (Judy Dodge, 2009). This is an incredibly important style of teaching, particularly when engaging with children as their senses are a vital part of learning (Ben Mardell, PhD). As we move toward becoming sustainable and environmentally aware individuals, our understanding and respect for our world is crucial, and it all starts with our appreciation for nature.

Teaching children about the wonders of our planet and the living things that inhabit it can only be enhanced by having nature in the room! Our encounters engage your students on all three levels - verbal, visual and tactile, creating a holistic learning experience. Wildlife become learning tools, as the students use their senses to explore the wildlife they create strong, positive associations which will carry them through to adulthood. Being inspired by nature will create strong minded individuals who will protect and value our native species. The survival of our planet is a door, and our ‘hands-on, minds-on’ wildlife encounters are the key.
